best spa hotels in Chengdu with wellness offerings

The 10 Best Spa Hotels in Chengdu for a Relaxing Wellness Stay

Chengdu is famous for giant pandas, fiery Sichuan food and its famously laid-back way of life. But there’s another side of the city that’s well worth discovering: wellness.

From traditional Chinese therapies and tea-inspired treatments to meditation, yoga, saunas and personalised wellness programmes, Chengdu has some wonderful spa hotels where you can slow down and recharge.

I’ve chosen these 10 hotels based on the quality and variety of their wellness offerings, rather than simply whether they have a spa. Some are in the heart of Chengdu, making it easy to combine sightseeing with an afternoon treatment, while others feel more like peaceful retreats where wellness takes centre stage.

Six Senses Qing Cheng Mountain

If your main reason for booking a wellness hotel in Chengdu is to properly switch off, Six Senses Qing Cheng Mountain is hard to beat. Around an hour from central Chengdu and close to Qingcheng Mountain, it feels much more like a wellness retreat than a traditional city hotel.

The 1,710-square-metre spa has 10 treatment rooms, a yoga and meditation studio, Tai Chi garden, sauna, steam room, indoor pool and fitness centre. Treatments draw on local traditions, including moxibustion and Taoist-inspired therapies.

What really sets Six Senses apart, though, is its structured wellness programmes. You can choose from Sleep, Detox, Discover Yoga and Fitness, with experiences tailored around your goals. Depending on the programme, these can include consultations, meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, nutrition advice, treatments and movement sessions.

If you want a proper wellness escape rather than simply a massage between sightseeing, this would be my pick.

The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu

For a classic luxury hotel spa experience, The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu is another excellent choice. Its 2,300-square-metre spa has 10 private treatment rooms, including two couples’ suites, and uses VALMONT products alongside locally sourced teas and medicinal herbs.

The treatment menu includes deep tissue massages, facials, body scrubs, body wraps, couples’ massages and foot baths. There are also more distinctive experiences, such as Five Elements Therapy and Aroma Sound Healing.

Beyond the treatment rooms, you’ll find a 25-metre heated indoor pool, yoga studio, Technogym fitness centre, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi.

After a long day exploring Chengdu, I’d be tempted by one of the tea-inspired treatments or a full-body massage followed by some quiet time in the sauna and steam room.

Waldorf Astoria Chengdu

The Waldorf Astoria Chengdu takes wellness to new heights, with its spa and indoor pool located on the 48th floor.

The 500-square-metre spa has six private treatment suites, while the wider wellness facilities include a 25-metre heated indoor pool, whirlpool, sauna, steam room, ice room, experience showers and salt room.

The spa focuses on VALMONT facial treatments and signature therapies that combine traditional tea philosophies with modern techniques.

You can easily turn a treatment into a longer wellness session by making use of the pool and thermal facilities before or afterwards. There’s also a 24-hour fitness centre, making it easy to create your own wellness routine during your stay.

Shangri-La Chengdu

Shangri-La Chengdu is a great option if you like having plenty of treatments to choose from. Its CHI, The Spa offers everything from relaxing aroma massages and the signature CHI Balance Massage to deep tissue sports massage, traditional Wushu massage, Asian Blend Massage and Himalayan crystal salt massage.

There are also facials, body wraps and aromatherapy baths, with extras such as hot stones and hot oil available for selected treatments.

The variety is particularly useful if you’re travelling with someone who prefers a different style of treatment. You can also speak with the spa team about combining experiences to create a longer, more personalised session.

Upper House Chengdu

For something more intimate, Upper House Chengdu is a lovely choice. Its Mi Xun Spa is set within a restored heritage building near Taikoo Li and focuses on holistic treatments and therapies.

One of its signature experiences is the Bamboo Massage, which uses locally sourced bamboo canes for a targeted massage. The spa also offers Hydrafacial and Biologique Recherche treatments alongside its massage and beauty therapies.

The hotel’s 25-metre heated pool, sauna, steam room and Technogym gym make it easy to combine treatments with exercise and relaxation. It also hosts curated Wellness Weekends, with selected activities complimentary for in-house guests.

There are wellness-focused stay packages too. The Chengdu 48 offer, for example, has included spa credit, discounts on selected Mi Xun Spa treatments and access to the gym and pool.

If you’re comparing spa hotels in Chengdu, Upper House is a particularly good choice if you want your wellness experience to feel personal and unhurried.

JW Marriott Hotel Chengdu

JW Marriott Hotel Chengdu is a convenient choice if you want to stay centrally while still having plenty of wellness facilities nearby. Its ISPA spa offers a broad selection of treatments that combine Eastern and Western techniques.

The hotel also has a fitness centre with a sauna and steam room, an indoor heated swimming pool and a whirlpool.

I like this option for its flexibility. You can keep things simple with a massage after sightseeing, spend some time in the pool and steam room, or use the fitness facilities as part of a longer wellness routine.

It’s a good fit if you want the convenience of a central luxury hotel without making your entire Chengdu trip about wellness.

Grand Hyatt Chengdu

Grand Hyatt Chengdu is another strong city-centre option, particularly if you want traditional spa facilities close at hand. Huan Spa has private treatment suites, while the wellness area includes a heated swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna and steam rooms.

It’s especially convenient after a busy day exploring the city. Rather than travelling elsewhere for a treatment, you can return to the hotel, book a massage and spend some time unwinding in the wellness area afterwards.

For travellers who want a full-service luxury hotel with a good spa but don’t necessarily want a dedicated wellness retreat, this is a practical choice.

W Chengdu

If you prefer your wellness experience with a more contemporary edge, W Chengdu is a stylish option. Located in the city’s High-Tech Zone, the hotel combines modern design with a wellness offering centred around fitness, swimming and relaxation.

The hotel has a well-equipped fitness centre, indoor pool and sauna facilities, giving you plenty of ways to unwind without needing to spend your entire afternoon in a treatment room. The spacious wellness areas also make it easy to fit in a workout or swim between exploring Chengdu.

What I like about W Chengdu is that it feels less traditional than some of the city’s more classic luxury spa hotels. If you enjoy modern surroundings and prefer to mix exercise with a little relaxation, rather than focusing entirely on spa treatments, it’s a refreshing alternative.

The St. Regis Chengdu

The St. Regis Chengdu offers another polished luxury spa experience at its Iridium Spa, with nine treatment rooms, sauna and steam rooms and a modern fitness centre. The hotel also has indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

The spa focuses on personalised treatments, making it a good option if you’d prefer something tailored to you rather than simply choosing a standard massage.

It’s also worth considering if you’re travelling as a couple and want to turn your spa visit into a longer, more leisurely experience. You can combine treatments such as massages and facials for a few uninterrupted hours of relaxation.

Niccolo Chengdu

Niccolo Chengdu is a slightly different option, with its wellness offering placing more emphasis on fitness, swimming and relaxation than an extensive traditional spa menu.

Its Wellness Centre features Technogym equipment and large windows overlooking Daci Temple and Taikoo Li. There’s also a 20-metre lap pool and saunas, giving you plenty of ways to unwind after a day in the city.

The hotel also offers private swimming classes designed to improve technique while providing a more relaxed wellness experience.

If your idea of wellness is staying active, swimming and having a beautiful place to exercise rather than spending hours in a treatment room, Niccolo could be the perfect fit. For spa hotels in Chengdu with a stronger focus on fitness and relaxation, it’s definitely worth considering.
