After so many questions about what it’s really like to be a travel influencer, I thought it was time for another Ask Phoebe. This time, we’re getting into the honest, unfiltered side of turning travel into a career. From how it all started to the highs, the challenges, and everything in between, I’m answering your most curious questions.
If you’ve ever wondered what this lifestyle actually looks like beyond the highlight reel, or you’re thinking about chasing a similar path, this one’s for you.
How did you become a travel influencer? What inspired you to turn travel into a career?
I started with a blog way back when blogging was just popping off! A friend suggested I start one as an outlet for my love of writing, and secretly, I thought it would be cool to get a free meal once in a while in exchange for a review!
My love of travel came about when I was backpacking solo around Europe. I remember looking out a train window thinking, ‘I want to do this forever.’ From then on, travel became a core part of my life. After a loved one passed away, many years later, I realised life is short, and you just have to go for it! So, I quit my job and made travel my focus.
What does being a travel influencer actually involve day-to-day?
Sometimes it’s insanely cool and glamorous! You’re in the best room on a luxury cruise around Norway or staying at an insane hotel in Paris, eating fresh macarons. Other days, you’re doing accounting, fighting with editing software, deleting hateful comments or doing 14 hours in a tiny plane seat.
It’s a mix of unbelievable life moments and gritty travel experiences, mixed with running your own small business.
Is the lifestyle as glamorous as it looks online?
Definitely! It’s such a privilege to live the life I do. I have an insane amount of freedom and get to experience things most people dream of their whole lives. I can be in Cape Town one day and Tokyo the next.
What’s the most challenging part of being a travel influencer?
As a solo creator, you do a lot of things alone. You fly alone, stay in hotels alone, eat every meal alone and spend all day filming and exploring alone. It’s important to find ways to connect and ground yourself.
Do you ever experience burnout from constant travel?
Heck yes! I burnt out so bad last year, I thought I was going insane and needed to be medicated! This year, I’m doing a better job of finding balance. I’ve had to work hard to find a travel rhythm that’s sustainable.
How do you manage finances as a travel influencer?
I wish I had some super insightful answer for this, but I just try not to live beyond my means. That’s it.
How do you handle negative comments or criticism?
At this point, I’ve heard it all. I’ve been called everything you can think of, harassed, bullied and threatened in every way possible. It’s sad, but it takes a lot to bother me now. The best thing to do, I’ve found, is just block the person and move on. Don’t engage, don’t dwell, just block them and keep going.
Has being a travel influencer changed you as a person?
Definitely. I’m significantly more confident! It’s helped me overcome my anxiety and develop a deep sense of self-worth and pride. It’s shown me how capable I am.
How do you maintain relationships while travelling frequently?
You have to work hard to stay in touch with those you love! I send lots of voice notes and photos, trying to connect with my friends and family regularly. I also make an effort to visit those closest to me at least once a year.
What would you say to someone who wants to become a travel influencer?
Just go for it! The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is right now. Stop waiting and just START.
I hope this gave you a clearer, more honest look at life as a travel influencer. It’s a mix of incredible experiences, real challenges, and a lot of personal growth along the way. If you’ve been thinking about starting your own journey, take this as your sign to begin. There’s no perfect moment, just the choice to go for it.
